Rise and Shine Theme
02:20
|
|||
The Rise and Shine show is unique broadband interactive entertainment. It's simple and fun.
The live audience suggests stories taken from the day's news, and the songwriters then write and perform a song within 3 hours, with audience participation. It's fascinating viewing and listening.
The songs are good. Sometimes tongue in cheek or sardonic, sometimes soulful, they emerge from news in a range of styles and genres - from heartfelt ballads, to infectious stomps, hard-hitting poetry to farce, tragedy, comedy, protest, celebration - these daily songs go beyond clever - they are articulating real issues which affect all our daily lives.
People have commented on the impressive variety which has come out of the project - the extremely spooky "Three Feet off Gabriola" about human feet being washed up on Canadian beaches, "Sexy Underwear" which deals with sexual exploitation and Parisian landlords, and "The Other Side", a poetic muse on mortality. But the show also produced the classic Euston Films romp "Strike!" and the epic tale of Hope, the gambling cat from Cincinatti.
We donate money raised by the pilot shows to charity.

Gimme Pill
02:33
|
|||
Every day in the wrong job
Girlfriend's gone and took my job
I got gout in my good leg,
And I got doubts running round my head
Got to go and see the doc
Get me through this mental block
Doctor I am in a mess
Please prescribe me Happiness
Doctor, Doctor, gimme little pill
I need a fix for me to chill
Medicine for my mental ill
Don't get depressed about the bill
One week later, great new job
brand new girlfriend, nice new dog
I turn myself into a go-getter
Feeling one hundred and one percent better
Three weeks later, pills are running low
Back to the doctor I must go
Fearful of my emotional abasement
Got to get my happy pill replacement
Doctor, Doctor, gimme little pill
I need a fix for me to chill
Medicine for my mental ill
Don't get depressed about the bill

Money to Burn
04:46
|
|||
Hey Bill it's a bitter pill
You ain't no more king of this hill
You slipped down to number 3
You me and Slim, the Holy Trinity
Hey Bill, you lost the top slot
But look at all the money money money that I got
I flash my cash, avoid the crash
But I don't do bling, 'cause I ain't trash
I got money to burn,
I got money to burn
I got money to burn,
How much do you earn?
I got money to burn,
I got money to burn
I got money to burn,
'til I'm old and infirm...
I'm rich, I'm stinking wealthy
I got so much it just ain't healthy
I don't remember how much I made
All I know is it helps me get laid
I got more money than I got sense
I don't care if you take offense,
Cause I'm just giving you my two cents,
When I charge such extortionate rents
I got money to burn,
I got money to burn
I got money to burn,
How much do you earn?
I got money to burn,
I got money to burn
I got money to burn,
'til I'm old and infirm...
I'm number one on the Forbes list
I don't give a fuck if that makes you pissed
See this ass? Well it gets kissed
And when you die you ain't gonna be missed
It ain't worth my while to lie to you
I don't need to struggle, I don't need to fight you
Cause there ain't nothing this cash can't buy
I got sixty two billion to comply
I got money to burn,
I got money to burn
I got money to burn,
How much do you earn?
I got money to burn,
I got money to burn
I got money to burn,
'til I'm old and infirm...

Three Feet Off Gabriola
06:59
|
|||
(spoken)
Out in the dark, out in the water,
Out in the stinking sea
Out from the dark
Out from the water
Came three bodiless feet
(sung)
The first foot was found near Jedediah beach
A white running shoe near the trunk of a tree
He ran and ran to get away from the man
But he couldn't run fast enough for the sea
Oh, Gabriola
What secrets you hide
Left in the ocean, brought in by the tide
Oh Gabriola, Jedediah, Valdes,
There's only so much the green sea can erase
Oh, Gabriola
In Nanaimo, Vancouver's rusty town
No-hoper Angels they got the place locked down
Nobody can be certain if it ain't just that floatplane
that went down, down, down
Oh, Gabriola
What secrets you hide
Left in the ocean, brought in by the tide
Oh Gabriola, Jedediah, Valdes,
There's only so much the green sea can erase
Oh, Gabriola
Yellowed by time and water, like quartz,
Preserved by the rubber and plastic support
And nobody can guess where may lie those left feet
In the deep Strait of Georgia, encased in concrete?
Oh, Gabriola
What secrets you hide
What's left in the ocean, brought in by the tide
Oh Gabriola, Jedediah, Valdes,
There's only so much the green sea can erase
Oh, Gabriola
Oh, Gabriola
Oh, Gabriola
(vocoder)
white leather ...

The Other Side
03:43
|
|||
What you going to do with today
Is this the last time?
Giving up on giving away
There'll always be a next time, always be a next time
And I try to do my best
In the time I've had to take my test
Pain and pleasure, it's been my ride
I'll see you on the other side, see you on the other side
Aren't too many hours in the day
Last a whole lifetime
Like actors playing out on the stage
Oh this could be their last night, oh this could be their last night
And they try to do their best
In the time they've had to take their test
Pain and pleasure, it's been their ride
I'll see them on the other side, see them on the other side
Putting in the extra hours, is it making any difference?
Or am I just looking down on the green side of the fence,
On the green side of the fence
I try to do my best
In the time I've had to take my test
Pain and pleasure, it's been my ride
I'll see you on the other side,
I'll see you on the other side,
I'll see you on the other side

At the end of a long Catholic day
I put all my mitres away
I've heard confessions you wouldn't believe
All the people they look up to me
As we pray together on bended knee
And we all ask God to relieve
A passion you wouldn't believe
A passion you wouldn't believe
In a bar where the Vatican ends
I like to meet up with my friends
And sink a créme-de-menthe or three
Our vestments we leave in the church
'Cause we'd rather wear leather and torn fish-net shirts
And we flirt in good company
In a fashion you don't often see
A fashion you don't often see
And we mingle with princes and paupers
Sportswomen, sports fans and their daughters
Baristas who've made it to sisters
A path of rejection and pain...
So my day job is saving your soul
For someone like me, there's no better role
It's a brotherhood of fun
I follow the path of our Lord
Just like him I welcome all sinners aboard
And God knows that I'm one
With a passion that won't be undone
A passion that won't undone
And I mingle with princes and paupers
Sportswomen, sports fans and their daughters
Baristas who've made it to sisters
A path of rejection and pain...
At the end of a long Catholic day
I put all my money away
I've heard confessions you wouldn't believe
Oh, the congregation looks up to me
As we pray together on bended knee
And we all ask God to relieve
Our passion you wouldn't believe
Our passion you wouldn't believe
Our passion you wouldn't believe

Educating Ellie
04:52
|
|||
Aliens are landing
Bright lights are in the sky
Heard it on the radio
Must be a UFO
Aliens are landing
Shepherds and the three kings
Lanterns for Santa
It's all the local banter
Educating Ellie
Her festivities
Become a mystery
Hot air balloons she flies
Into the night sky
E.T. publicity
Ellie's understanding
Lapland landing
Watch her wishes drift away
Bringing presents on Christmas day
A lot of fuss and bother
Ellie's grandmother
Heard it on the radio
Where did those balloons go?
Educating Ellie
Her festivities
Become a mystery
Hot air balloons she flies
Into the night sky
E.T. publicity

Hamster Fad
03:26
|
|||
I saved up all my cash
I spent six months flipping burgers
Delivering the news
I did whatever I could do
I want to buy a hamster
A cutie little pet
So I'm saving all my money
I haven't got it yet
I used to have a dog
I liked him such a lot
I took him home to Mom
She put him in the pot
Put him in the pot
My sister has a fish
Just like the rest of Vietman
But her pet is wet and weird
You can't stroke it in your hand
So I want to buy a hamster
A cutie little pet
Hamster cheeks are bulging
He fills them 'til they're fat - FAT!
I used to have a kitten
It was a Burmese Blue
But when I showed him Mama
She put him in the stew
Put him in the stew
Well, it's a glorious day here in Ho Chi Minh City!
A small rodent with four legs
smuggled in from China, with some fake chicken eggs
and bogus remedies of old Malaria, spreading disease throughout the area..
Now I have my hamster
I feel like I belong
What's that knocking on the door?
What have I done so wrong?
Please don't take away my Daddy
He's not a bad, bad baddy
We can't afford the fine
30 million Dong - 30 million Dong!
I used to have a hamster
I used to have a Dad
But now my Dad's in jail
For my hamster fad
For my hamster fad
For my hamster fad
For my hamster fad
For my hamster fad
For my hamster fad
For my hamster fad
A little hamster fad
For my hamster fad
For my hamster fad
For my hamster fad
Just a hamster fad

Strike!
02:51
|
|||
Let's go on strike
What say you brother?
I would say more, but I am working to rule.
Managing director Stewart Palmer said: "We regret the significant disruption this will cause to our passengers and we reassure them that we will do everything we can to avoid this strike taking place.
"We are very disappointed that Aslef has taken this decision as we believe that this is a very good offer in the current economic climate."

Sin Anew
04:44
|
|||
"Forgive me, oh my Father
I've forgotten how to sin
It's been ten long years now
Won't you tell me where to begin?"
He said "I'm glad you've come to see me
You're a fine, upstanding man
And I know you've fallen back
But we can restore you to God's plan..."
"Violate, yes violate the Rights of all Mankind
Experimentally leave your morality behind
Pollute this fair world until the rivers run black
Then grow a coat of pink ears upon a monkey's back
You may think you're doing fine, assume you're doing well,
But the church has seven brand new ways to get you into Hell..."
"Please forgive me, oh my Father
I've forgotten how to sin
It's been ten long years now
Won't you tell me where to begin?"
"Drive up prices, divert all the funds
From the poor to your door, and leave them just crumbs... "

Embryonic Future Disco
05:48
|
|||
Got to get down to this brand new rhythm
Come on baby, let's be born again
We don't need this DNA we're given
This embryonic disco never ends
We can make a brand new congregation
His Genetic Message we must send
Oh, honey, we can clone our way to Heaven
Get close to God with all our furry friends
We don't have to die
Cloning is the reason why
All together, let's hear you cry
We don't have to die...

Mosquito
02:46
|
|||
You're a new guy in town
Too small a fry to be put down
Can't say how you get around
But I can hear your buzzing sound
Dont know how you are so quick
But can we trust you, private Dick
When you present your evidence
I'm going to hold you in contempt
Mosquito, you bit me
And just then it hit me
Mosquito they used you
They'll show you no mercy
They used you Mosquito...

Drugs are Cheap
05:31
|
|||
(spoken)
Hang on mate, I think I got some... I think I got some here, hang on I'll just count it out for you.. no, hang on a minute, some in me back pocket... hang on..
(sung)
It's not the same as yesteryear
Sky high, the price of beer
I can't afford to get drunk
So I bought these pills from a teenage punk
A friend of my grandson's, actually,
A very nice fella
He's got bright red boots
He dyes his hair yellow
He said, "Grandad, why the long face?
It's such a beautiful world, what a beautiful place!"

Can he turn the tables?
Can he fix the tables?
Will he enable?
Internet breakdown
Time for a shakedown
Internet breakdown
Time for a shakedown
It's the end... of the internet...
World combustion
Mass destruction
People are wasted
Copied and pasted
Everything's broken
Everything's choking
Computers are smoking...
Internet breakdown
Time for a shakedown
Internet breakdown
Time for a shakedown
It's the end... of the internet...
No more MySpace
No more Facebook
Twitter's down the shitter
Google's in a woogle
Internet breakdown
Time for a shakedown
Internet breakdown
Time for a shakedown
It's the end... of the internet...

Paper Planes
04:23
|
|||
In Japan Mister Suzuki
Had a plan just a little bit kooky
Paper planes from sugar cane
Prototypes for the gravy train
Re-entering the atmosphere
They'll be landing nobody knows where
Tiny paper planes are flying
A million dollars just for trying...
When other nations are so bold
A million newspapers are sold
And the story still unfolds...
Ooh - how very entertaining
Aah - it's raining paper planes..
To boldly go where noone's been A4
Knock knock knocking on heaven's door
Wash up on an astral shore
Or trampled on a dusty floor
Pasta ships and boomerangs
Fish and chips and French meringues
Paper-weights paper plates
And bric-a-brac from outer space
Craft of every shape and size
And flavour fill the skies
Foolscap's stratospheric cost
Earth is paper and is lost...

Manuel
02:05
|
|||
Manuel found a pretty señorita
After he cut back on the tortilla
He ate a lot of protein
Was as slender as he'd ever been
440 pounds lighter
Still heavy but utterly delighted
A picnic he has planned
With his beautiful girlfriend
A forklift arrived -
With his heart full of love,
His mother, his sister, his friends gave a shove
and his big iron bed was lifted up high,
and off to the picnic went Manuel Uribe - hey!
The people wanted to be near him
Children coming out to cheer him
As Manuel passed by
underneath the Mexican sky...
In San Nicholas de las Garza
snacking on chile con carne
His truck hit the overpass
His happiness it could not last
With press and newspapers,
and heart full of love
But falling blood-pressure,
the blow from above
So back home he goes in his big iron bed
- "I'll see my girlfriend on my birthday instead!"

I'm on the train, I'm on my way
I get up early every day
Get on the train two minutes late
And I'm losing half a day's pay
Oh, I got I a job, I'm building
Skyscrapers the American way
Mmm, my lovely woman, my children
Ain't gonna go hungry today
We're on the train, there ain't no room
So I got to get up on the roof
It isn't nice, we hold on tight
It's dangerous, but what can you do?
Mmm, I gets in my job
Skyscrapers the American way
Oh my lovely wife, my children
Ain't gonna go hungry today
I'm on the train, I'm coming home
So tired, I been working all day
And once again, I'm up on the roof
My eyes are stinging and I'm afraid
Oh, I can't hold on, I'm slipping
I'm falling off and hitting the track
Oh, and now my legs ain't moving
I think I may have broken my back
And lying here, I miss my wife
I'm cold and tired, covered in spray
And wondering when, or if I will walk again,
or does it end this way?
I once had a job, a job building
Skyscrapers the American way...
And a lovely wife, and children
I used to love watching them play

Good Morning
03:32
|
|||
Good morning, my sister, face turned to the sun
starving for the sins of men, nothing you have done
Good morning my brother, now it's time to go to school
they teach you well - in this living hell, there ain't no choice at all
Now, how you make your money is the measure of a man
And when there isn't any, it's a curse upon the land
And the devil is among us, and the flames that he has fanned
Flare up to feed the hungry - anger's all they understand
Oh Good Morning my sister, face turned to the sun
starving for the sins of men, nothing you have done
Oh Good Morning my brother it's time to go to school
they teach you well - in this living hell, there ain't no choice at all
The way my father raised me I can tell right from wrong
and i know this land is crazy, but it's where I belong
and if i take the money that rich men trickle down
so small and so infrequently, in poverty we drown
Oh Good Morning my sister, face turned to the sun
starving for the sins of men, nothing you have done
oh Good Morning my brother it's time to go to school
they teach you well - in this living hell, there ain't no choice at all
They say there are good people in countries far from here
they send us food and money, bullets, pain and fear
but the food won't feed a baby, and the cash don't get to us
and so to feed my family, I'm stepping on that bus
Oh good morning my sister, face turned to the sun
starving for the sins of men, nothing you have done
Oh good morning my brother it's time to go to school
They teach you well - in this living hell, there ain't no choice at all
The luxury of choices, the pleasure of the giving
and death is never welcome but it serves to feed the living
and life it can be cheapened, whole neighbourhoods erased
and nations reduced to rubble, but democracy is saved
Oh good morning my sister, face turned to the sun
starving for the sins of men, nothing you have done
Oh good morning my brother it's time to go to school
They teach you well - in this living hell, there ain't no choice at all
